Seminar Highlight: PHYSICS MATTERS – Transforming Cancer Treatment in Low-Resource Settings

November 16, 2024

On September 26, 2024, Prof. Manjit Dosanjh, affiliated with the University of Oxford, CERN, and the International Cancer Expert Corps (ICEC), presented at the PHYSICS MATTERS Colloquium organized by the American Physical Society’s (APS) Forum on Physics and Society. Her talk, titled “Transforming Cancer Treatment in Low-Resource Settings”, addressed the urgent shortage of radiation therapy in Sub-Saharan Africa and other underserved regions.

In this seminar, Prof. Dosanjh introduced Project STELLA (Smart Technology to Extend Lives with Linear Accelerators), an initiative aimed at bridging gaps in radiotherapy access through collaboration with global partners. Project STELLA’s mission is to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions that enable equitable access to essential cancer treatments in low-resource settings. The discussion underscored the role of technology, training, and collaborative frameworks in creating sustainable healthcare solutions.

Prof. Dosanjh’s participation in events like PHYSICS MATTERS highlights a commitment to the principles of HITRIplus’s Networking Pillar: building global connections, sharing expertise, and advocating for more equitable access to advanced cancer care. This initiative underscores a shared mission to connect international stakeholders in a concerted effort to address healthcare disparities.
